An Asset may be installed to implement a particular System function, defined by a System Element. When this occurs, that Asset’s Status transitions to “Deployed”, and the Asset becomes associated with that System Element. InfraLink integrates Asset deployment workflow with Case updates to provide for configuration management and auditability. An Asset’s deployment history is tracked at both the Asset and System Element levels.
A single Asset may be installed and uninstalled multiple times throughout its lifecycle, potentially at different Locations and/or to implement different System Elements. A specific System Element may be implemented by (i.e., associated with) different Assets throughout its lifecycle. The System Element’s function and Location remain the same, but an associated Asset can be replaced due to failures or regular lifecycle replacement.
This article discusses the following topics related to Asset deployment.
System Element Actions and Asset Deployment Action Forms
In order to provide a coordinated User experience, each System Element action will be associated with an Asset deployment action form. The Asset deployment action form will define how the Asset information is presented and how the deployment records are updated. There are three (3) basic Asset deployment action forms: Install, Uninstall and Replace.
Install
The “install” action allows the User to associate an Asset with the System Element and creates a new deployment record. The User will follow these steps for an Asset installation:
- The User should, through a standard System Element workflow (e.g., Case) utilize the "Install" button from the Device Details panel for that System Element. The "Install" button will open the Install Asset deployment action form.
- The User should populate all required fields. The required fields in this action form include: Asset Tag, Install Time, and Asset Status. The Install Time is set to the current time by default.
- Once the User has populated all required fields in the Install action form, he/she will click the "Install" button in the bottom right hand corner of the form to update the Asset association.
- InfraLink automatically creates the "install" deployment record at both the Asset and System Element level.
Uninstall
The “uninstall” action allows the User to remove the Asset association from a System Element and creates a corresponding uninstall record. The User will follow these steps for an Asset uninstallation:
- The User should, through a standard System Element workflow (e.g., Case) utilize the "Uninstall" button from the Device Details panel for that System Element. The "Uninstall" button will open the Uninstall Asset deployment action form.
- The User should populate all required fields. Note: Because the Asset is presently Deployed, the form will automatically populate the Asset Tag and Asset Condition Code fields. The required fields that the User must populate include the Warehouse Location and the Asset Status. The Warehouse Location selected should be the target destination for the uninstalled Asset.
- The Uninstallation Time will be set to the current time by default.
- Once the User has populated all required fields in the Uninstall action form, he/she will click the "Uninstall" button in the bottom right hand corner of the form to remove the Asset association.
- InfraLink automatically creates the "uninstall" deployment record at both the Asset and System Element level.
Replace
The “replace” action allows the User to remove the Asset previously associated with a System Element and then associate a new Asset with that System Element. This action creates the corresponding uninstall and install records. The User will follow these steps for an Asset Replacement:
- In the case of an Asset replacement, the System Element (e.g., “Device”) details panel should indicate a Deployed Asset. From the System Element details panel, the User will click the Replace button in the top left corner.
- The Replace Asset deployment action form will pop up for the User to populate. This form includes “Uninstallation Information” fields for the Asset being removed and “Installation Information” fields for the Asset being installed (i.e., Deployed).
- Once the User has populated all required fields in the Replace Asset Deployment action form, he/she will click the Replace button in the bottom right corner of the form to update the Asset association.
- InfraLink automatically creates the “uninstall” and “install” deployment records at both the Asset and the System Element level.
The Asset deployment action template for a particular System Element workflow action will be chosen as follows:
If the system Element's Current Logical State ... | ... and the System Element's Target Logical State ... | ... and the action is ... | Use the following Asset Action Template |
---|---|---|---|
is Installed | is Installed | not Replace | Update |
is Installed | is Installed | Replace | Replace |
is Installed | is not Installed | Uninstall | |
is not Installed | is not Installed | Update | |
is not Installed | is Installed | Install | |
is not Installed | is not Installed | Update |
Asset Deployment History Records
InfraLink maintains comprehensive deployment records for all Trackable Assets. The Asset deployment history will serve as the foundation for:
- Asset reliability reporting
- Property reporting
- Lifecycle replacement forecasting
